SUSTAINABLE BREEDING
Sustainable breeding of important European aquaculture species
Assess, validate and demonstrate the level of the ability of the current breeding programs, breeding goals and methodologies in four of the main European aquaculture species :
- Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)
- European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax)
- Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata)
- Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
Why? To answer the future challenges of:
- Increased need for utilisation of alternative feed sources in aquaculture feeds.
- Need for resilience in the face of climate change.
- Maintained and increased animal welfare through robustness and disease resistance.
The same genetic material of salmon, seabass, and seabream is used across the tasks enabling a holistic assessment of sustainable breeding development in European aquaculture species. The traits recorded and evaluated are aligned with the principals of both conventional and organic aquaculture, and consequently the results will benefit the aquaculture industry as a whole.
